The Row function is one of those little known items in Excel. This function returns the row number of the active cell or specified cell. This function is very helpful as a component of larger formulas that require a row input. In this example we will simply number the rows on our table.

1. Above is a vendor table. I would like to add numbers for each vendor.

2. Type in Row(reference cell) in this example the reference would be cell A1.

Note: The formula pulls the row number based on the cell specified ex. A1 the return value is 1. When this argument is left blank the active cell row is returned.

3. This formula can then be copied down to the remaining rows. This quickly numbers each selection.
