One of the most frequently used formulas in Excel is that of multiplication. For example =A1 * B1. Did you know that Excel has a built in function for this. It is called Product (). Below is a brief outline of this alternative method. It’s always good to know different ways to do the same thing. You never know when it will come in handy.

1. Above is a table of typical office supplies.

2. In order to get the total cost typically a person would multiply using the * symbol (ie =C2*D2)

3. In cell E3 type = Product(C3, D3)

a. Each item to be multiplied is separated by a comma

4. Above is the final table showing two ways to get a product. One approach uses a formula the second uses a function.
